Pollution is anything that makes the earth dirty and unhealthy. Land, air, and water are all affected by pollution. Pollution takes up space on our land. Many of the things people use every day come in packages, like food, games, school supplies, and electronics. These packages end up in large underground dumps called landfills. Landfills make land unhealthy for animals and people. Pollution Hurts People & Animals Pollution is in the air we breathe. Trucks, cars, and school buses leak smoky exhaust from their engines. Water gets polluted with cleaners, paints, and chemicals. All of the pollution must be removed from our water before we can drink it. Dumping chemicals into the ocean can hurt sea creatures. This affects human beings, too. People can get sick when they eat the poisoned fish. Loose garbage takes away from the natural beauty of the earth. When trash is not put away, people and animals get exposed to things that could hurt them, like broken glass and harmful chemicals. How Can We Stop Pollution? As long as people live on the earth, there is no way to completely stop pollution. Humans use a lot of stuff! We can pollute a lot less, though. We can give away the video games, toys, and books that we no longer use. This way they will not end up in a landfill. Plastic, paper, glass, and other materials can sometimes be recycled or made into something else. Always look for a place to recycle something before just throwing it in the trash. If trash cannot be recycled, at least put it in a trash can instead of leaving it on the ground! Look for art supplies, cleaners, and other chemicals that will not hurt our water supply, land, or air. The labels on products tell us whether or not they are safe. Ask your friends to ride with you to school, basketball practice, and anywhere else you go. If you do this, fewer cars will be on the road polluting the air. Lesson Summary Pollution comes in many forms, but it always brings harm to the world we live in. When land, water, and air get exposed to pollution, people, animals, and plants suffer. Think about the choices you make when you shop, eat, ride to and from places, and put your trash away. By making some changes, we can help the earth to be a cleaner, healthier place to live. Quick Notes Pollution affects everything • Pollution can affect the air, land, and sea • Pollution has negative impacts on all living things on Earth • Pollution cannot be stopped but it can be minimized Learning Outcomes When you are done, you should be able to: • Identify what pollution is • Describe how pollution affects plants, animals, and humans • List some ways we can reduce pollution. Is that water safe to drink? In this BrainPOP movie Tim and Moby will tell you all about water pollution! Discover what water pollution even means as well as how water becomes polluted and where the pollution can come from. You’ll also find out why it’s not just bad chemicals that can be pollutants - as well as what happens, exactly, when a body of water gets polluted. Plus, find out why we’re to blame for a good deal of water pollution and what’s being done to help the problem. Go ahead, the water’s fine! In this multi-day lesson plan which is adaptable for grades 5-12, students use BrainPOP resources to practice crafting reasoned arguments and explore the effect of humans on the environment. Through an online game, students will learn about the causes of water pollution in a lake and pose a question about the local water supply to community residents. Students then compile the residents' opinions during game play and compose a persuasive letter to their congressional representative asking for his or her support in improving water conditions.
